Torque Sensor Popular Science Episode 4-Requirements for Sensor Assembly Structure and Output Signals

The second category of requirements covers the structural parameters of torque sensors.

Tolerances of critical dimensions. 

Torque sensors are precision components that require precise assembly and matching with motors and reducers. To ensure products meet tolerance standards, engineering drawings with clearly marked tolerance values for critical dimensions must be provided during the preliminary technical alignment phase.

  1. Manufacturing materials.

Common materials include high-strength stainless steel, aluminum alloy and titanium alloy. The specific material shall be selected comprehensively based on the actual operating environment of the equipment, as well as factors such as weight, rigidity and installation space.

  1. Surface treatment processes.

Standard processes include black oxide finishing, anodizing and electrophoretic coating, all of which can be customized on demand. Customized surface treatments will correspondingly extend the delivery lead time. If there are no special operating requirements, the standard factory finish is sufficient for normal operation.

  1. Operating temperature range.

Standard sensors operate within a temperature range of -10°C to 80°C. If the equipment needs to work in extreme environments such as low-temperature cold storage or high-temperature conditions, the required operating temperature range shall be specified in advance.

  1. Cable outlet type and ingress protection (IP) rating.

Two cable outlet types are available: connector-type and loose wire-type. When selecting the type, confirm the cable length, requirements for drag chain application and shielding configuration. The default IP rating of standard products is IP65; IP68-rated models shall be adopted for water-submerged working conditions.

The third category of requirements refers to output signal parameters. Signals serve as the data transmission medium between sensors and controllers; improper signal selection will result in failure to read data normally.

Five parameters shall be confirmed for analog signals:

Output channel quantity.

Single-channel output and dual-channel redundant output are available for selection based on the equipment’s safety performance requirements. Dual-channel output occupies more internal space inside the sensor and will slightly compromise the accuracy and stability of each individual channel.

Output voltage.

Supports millivolt raw signal output and amplified voltage output ranging from 0.5 V to 4.5 V.

Power supply voltage.

Compatible with power supply specifications of 5 V to 12 V.

Sampling rate.

The standard sampling rate is no less than 500 Hz and can be adjusted according to force control requirements. High-sampling-rate solutions require comprehensive evaluation considering operating temperature and internal space constraints.

Operating power consumption.

Power consumption under standard operating conditions is less than 1 W.

For digital signals, RS485, CAN and CAN FD communication protocols are optional. A widespread industry misconception is that digital signals support plug-and-play functionality. In reality, both parties must align on a unified data protocol prior to commissioning, covering baud rate, data frame format, checksum method, device ID assignment, terminal resistor configuration and other specifications.
